Grammatical Concept: The Hypothetical Reality

The Subjunctive Mood describes actions that are not real (yet), but are imagined, wished for, or hypothetical. Asaxi distinguishes between Neutral Hypotheticals (“It would happen”) and Emotional Desires (“I hope it happens”).

These particles appear at the end of the clause (Head-Final).

1. The Neutral Subjunctive (xăxă)

Function: Hypothetical / Irrealis Marker (“Would”, “As if”). Nuance: A scheming, trailing affirmation. It implies the speaker is visualizing the reality, nodding along to their own imagination.

  • Etymology: (Yes) + (Yes).
  • Literal: “Yes… yes…” (Trailing off).

Example:

Xő jo topù chě, wo ma xăxă. 3SG.M 3SG.INAN drop IF, 1SG have WOULD “If he dropped it, I would have (it)… (yes, yes…)“

2. The Desiderative Subjunctive (Hoping)

These particles mark the preceding clause as a Desire or Wish. They replace the need for a main verb like “I hope that…”

A. Positive Desire (dăxă)

Function: Optative Marker (“Hopefully”, “I wish”, “Desirably”). Nuance: Marks the hypothetical as something actively wanted or “High/Good.”

  • Etymology: (Elephant) + (Above/High).
  • Literal: “High Elephant.” (Cultural association of the Elephant with height/greatness).

Example:

To wo gajýnnshá niŕa dăxă. SUBJ 1SG were-hyena BECOME HOPEFULLY “I wish I were a were-hyena.” (Lit: I become were-hyena, high-elephant).

B. Negative Desire / Aversive (pùxă)

Function: Aversive Marker (“I hope not”, “God forbid”, “Lest”). Nuance: Marks the hypothetical as something “Under-want” or undesirable.

  • Etymology: (Below) + (treated here as “Want/Affirmation”).
  • Literal: “Under-want.”

Example:

Topo toponů pùxă. Rain raining HOPE-NOT “I hope it doesn’t rain.” (Lit: Rain rains, under-want).

C. The Prayer / Desperate Wish (xădăchỏxă)

Function: Supplicative Marker (“Please God”, “By the Deity”). Nuance: An intense, almost begging desire. It invokes the deity of desire directly.

  • Etymology: (Yes) + Dă Chỏ (Deity of Desire) + (Yes).
  • Literal: “Yes, Dă Chỏ, Yes.”

Example:

Ko wő ijo xădăchỏxă. She me see PRAYER “Please, let her see me.” / “Oh Dă Chỏ, may she see me.”
