Grammatical Concept: Flow Control

Asaxi uses specific particles to interrupt (Stop) or sustain (Continue) an action. These function as specialized Imperatives.

1. Cessation ()

1. Syntax (Free Positioning)

The particle can appear at either end of the verb, depending on the speaker’s focus.

A. Suffix (Reactionary) Attaches to the end of the verb.

  • Structure: [Verb]-nă.
  • Example:

    Exenă! Cry-CEASE “Stop crying!”

B. Prefix (Pre-emptive/Sharp) Attaches to the front of the verb.

  • Structure: nă-[Verb].
  • Example:

    Năshěsonů! CEASE-read “Stop reading!”

Distinction from náhè

  • náhè: “Do not read.” (General rule or future command).
  • nă: “Stop reading.” (Immediate interruption of current state).

2. Continuation ()

Meaning: “Continue!”, “Keep going!”, “Proceed!”, “Don’t stop!“.

  • Function: Encourages the subject to maintain the current state or action.

A. Suffix (Sustainment) Attaches to the end of the verb.

  • Structure: [Verb]-sů.
  • Example:

    Tom, shěsonůsů. Tom read-CONTINUE “Tom, continue reading.”

B. Prefix (Persistence) Attaches to the front of the verb.

  • Structure: sů-[Verb].
  • Example:

    John, ni jåhjo sůijo. John towards guiding-star CONT-look “John, don’t give up!” (Lit: Continue looking towards the destination)
