jå- (23_Modality & Verbal Compounding)
jå-
Grammatical function
- Type: Modal Prefix (Auxiliary Root)
- Meaning: To want to; expresses desire or intent to perform the action.
Usage Note
- Position: Attaches to the front of the main verb root, following Tense and Negation prefixes.
- Morphophonology (Bridge Rule Exception): The vowel å is a diphthong (IPA /au̯/). Because it ends in a glide/semi-vowel quality, it does not trigger the insertion of the hiatus-breaking bridge -x- when attached to a vowel-initial root.
- Example:
jå+ijobecomes jåijo (not jåxijo).
- Example:
Structure
[Tense] - [Negation] - jå - [Root]
Pronunciation
IPA: /jau̯/
